After 37 years of being frequently hailed as the single most influential figure in the fashion industry, magazine legend Anna Wintour left on Thursday as editor of US Vogue.

Wintour, age 75, was renowned for establishing a strong position on contemporary fashion on Vogue’s front covers and for having complete control over the glamorous pages inside.

Conde Nast, the publisher group owner, was quick to slam suggestions that she was retiring, but she won’t be able to manage the day-to-day editing of the fashion bible.

Wintour, who was born in the UK, gained notoriety as the author of the critically acclaimed 2003 film and television series “The Devil Wears Prada,” for which Meryl Streep received an Oscar nomination for her performance as Miranda Priestly, the editor of tyrannical magazine.

She was chosen as a British dame in 2017 and joined a select group of people who have never received more than 65 awards for significant contributions to their field.

Wintour claimed she had informed King Charles III that she had no intention of quitting her job at the ceremony in London in February.

In the heyday of glossy magazines, Wintour, who was raised in the UK by a British father and an American mother, ruled over Vogue.

When she took over the shaky title US Vogue in 1988, she transformed it into a forceful force that would dictate the direction of fashion designers, celebrities, and brands.

With large budgets for models, design, photography, and journalism supported by lavish advertisements and high subscription rates, she became famous for her title.

Vogue continues to be the magazine of fashion, but like many other print publications, it has had a hard time adapting to the digital era.

With her unchanging bob haircut and reputation for decisive leadership, such as axing work without discussion, and as a fixture on the front row of catwalk shows, Wintour was well-known.

Wintour has overseen the Met Gala, an extravagant fundraiser in Manhattan that draws an elite cast of actors from the worlds of film, politics, and sports, for many years.

She will continue to be in charge of publications like GQ, Glamour, Wired, Wired, and Conde Nast Traveler.

Wintour’s involvement in “The Devil Wears Prada,” written by Lauren Weisberger, one of Wintour’s former assistants, has remained a secret for many years.

But she told the BBC that it was “for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly” when it was transformed into a musical and opened in London in 2024.
