After Xiao Guodong had earlier hit a maximum as both players advanced to the second round of the Wuhan Open, Zhao Xintong narrowly missed out on a 147 break.

In a 5-3 defeat to Iulian Boiko in Ukraine, world champion Zhao, 28, of China, fluffed a straightforward final pink.

Zhao, who hit back-to-back breaks of 132 and 134, with the latter coming close in his near-misses, came back to tie the deal with a visit of 122.

Xiao, 36, who is currently defending champion, had earlier made a maximum with his 5-0 defeat of Thailand’s Mink Nutcharut.

It was truly remarkable for me to achieve a 147 here today and my first maximum break of any kind in China. Xiao from China told World Snooker, “I was thrilled to have that happen.”

World No. 1 Judd Trump also triumphed over Pakistan’s Farakh Ajaib with an emphatic 5-1 victory.

When the Englishman put together a break of 130, he was already in a 3-1 lead, and he eventually won with a half-century in the sixth frame.

Mark Williams, a three-time world champion, defeated fellow Welshman Liam Davies 5-3 in the first three frames by making a century break in each of them.

After being defeated by Marco Fu from Hong Kong with a 5-2 advantage, veteran Englishman Jimmy White was eliminated in the first round.
