Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the president’s wife, has urged Nigeria’s Super Falcons to aim for the FIFA Women’s World Cup title rather than the continent.
Following their victory in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Mrs. Tinubu addressed the team at a reception hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Monday.
Mrs. Tinubu remarked, “I told the president this morning that you needed to win the World Cup, and he thought I was too ambitious,” and that was exactly what the players were laughing at.
Let this serve as a launching pad for even greater success, champions! I have faith in you, just like Nigeria did. You are leading the charge in the field of women’s football, she continued.

She praised the team’s resilience and teamwork as inspirational and praised their accomplishments.
“Our fantastic team, who has once more made Nigerians proud, has made you and your family proud. Your victory at the Moroccan Women’s African Cup of Nations in 2024 was more than just a win. It also served as a reaffirmation of your resilience, teamwork, and resolve.
You played with ferocity, conviction, and unwavering belief in yourself that it won’t end until it is. You displayed nothing but inspirational energy during the pitch; I commend you on it. You never wavered, and you’ve kept Nigeria’s position as a top player in Africa’s women’s game alive.

Mrs. Tinubu referred to the players as role models who had taught young girls in Nigeria and other parts of Africa that greatness can be achieved with perseverance and hard work.
I extend my gratitude to the National Sports Commission, the Nigerian Football Federation, the technical team, and all the coaches. I also extend my sincere gratitude to the passionate Nigerian fans and the Super Falcons’ families for their unwavering support. We all have this victory, she continued.
The First Lady thanked Tinubu, the president, for his unwavering support for sports development.

The President, in his remarks, gave the winning team numerous awards and gave them generous rewards.
He said, “I hereby grant the players and the 11-man technical team the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in the name of a grateful nation.”
Additionally, I hereby direct the players and technical team members to each receive a three-bedroom apartment.
Additionally, the 24 players will receive the equivalent of $100, 000 each, and the 11-member technical team will receive the same amount.
I congratulate you once more and will keep praying for you. Nigeria’s spirit is unwavering and will never end as a result of this.
