If the local government administration is lacked the necessary authority to function effectively, according to Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Monday Ubani.

Ubani, a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, argued in favor of establishing state police, a pressing issue in national discourse.

The senior attorney raised the need for a legal framework to stop such misuse in response to concerns that governors might abuse state police.

He said, “People keep talking about rejigging the (security) architecture, allowing state police and everything else. How can we be arguing back and forth about that?” I concur that some governors may experience abuse because they are not mentally stable when given authority, so you must be cautious with that.

We said in the legal framework that we must put it in a way that prevents abuse because of this. The federal police will intervene if abuse is likely to occur. If local government administration is not allowed to function effectively, security can never exist in Nigeria.

Ubani claims that those in power are aware of what needs to be done to end insecurity but have failed to act because they are gaining from the ongoing chaos.

Tell me where you will start hearing about insecurity, and where will it come from, if we properly monitor our local governments.

They are aware of what to do, but they are also benefiting from the lapses and the decay that is occurring, he said, which is why they don’t want to address.
