As they take on Mumbai Indians Women on Saturday in Mumbai to defend their 2025 title, Delhi Capitals Women will hope to put an end to their poor performance in the WPL final.

Delhi have reached the third successive final, but they have yet to win the trophy. They now face Mumbai Indians, the team that defeated them in the first final in 2023.

The third-round of the tournament’s final is viewed by Al Jazeera.

How did the WPL final happen for the teams?

Mumbai Indians lost their final match, and with it, the top spot, to Delhi Capitals, who lost 11 runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday.

Mumbai would have to play the Gujarat Giants in a tie on Thursday against the third-placed team.

Hayley Matthews recorded a resounding 47-run victory with a total of 213-4 against 77.

Who were the WPL’s previous winners?

In the WPL final by seven wickets, Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi in 2023.

With an eight-wicket win last year, Bangalore’s Royal Challengers won the title.

Can the Delhi Capitals finally get over their final jinx?

Meg Lanning, a former Australia captain, believes her skipper’s winning mindset and unwavering optimism contributed to Delhi’s success since the WPL’s formation.

“Meg wants to win every game,” she says. She also has the clarity she needs while also achieving her goals. Jemimah Rodrigues, an Indian batter, praised the seven-time World Cup winner, saying that winning is one thing she tells us, but she also advises us to concentrate on what we need to do.

She makes sure she guides everyone along the way as she outlines what she wants to do and what she wants this team to accomplish. That, in my opinion, makes for a more effective team.

The combination of her calmness and aggression makes Meg the ideal person for me, and this is something I would like to add to myself. And that’s a very important trait to have as a leader.

Who are the top run scorers in the WPL?

  • Nat Sciver (416) (Brilliant Mumbai Indians)
  • 372 – Ellyse Perry (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
  • 300-A Shafali Verma (Delhi Capitals)
  • Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals) – 263

Who are the top wicket-takers in the WPL?

  • Amelia Kerr (Mumbai Indians) – 14
  • Hayley Matthews (Mumbai Indians) – 14
  • Georgia Wareham (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – 12

What is the formula for consistency in Delhi Capitals?

Rodrigues attributed the team’s consistency to its professionalism and teamwork, particularly during the most difficult season she has ever seen.

Every player “adds so much value to the team that they just know their stuff,” she said.

We are most proud of this year, according to the statement, “I think out of all the three seasons, we found a way to pick ourselves up and still come out on top.”

How likely is it that Mumbai will overtake Delhi?

Mumbai may have won one WPL title this year, but Delhi still hasn’t broken that record, and Delhi will carry their losing streak into Saturday’s game with them.

Matthews said as she evaluated the Mumbai squad, “We have a really good balance of international players as well as the local Indian players.”

Being able to step up as internationals, we get contributions from Nat [Sciver-Brunt], Melie [Amelia Kerr], Shab [Shabnim Ismail], and myself.

Even the young players like Sanskriti Gupta, who have arrived this year, have been able to make significant contributions, according to Kapur.

How did the Mumbai WPL final go?

The tournament has traveled extensively across India, with eight matches being played in Bengaluru and six games being played in Vadodara.

The 20-match group stage was completed by Lucknow and Mumbai.

Mumbai hosted the elimination game on Thursday.

In the WPL, are players with impact permitted?

The WPL does not permit the introduction of a substitute player into the team during the match in order to have an impact, unlike the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rodrigues in Delhi hopes that this is still the case. Because I enjoy the already-existing rules, she said, “I am not a huge fan of the impact player rule.”

“Sometimes it’s unfair to the bowlers when they have bowled so well and have done so much and then a proper batter is entering toward the end” they say.

How successful is the WPL?

Twenty20 leagues have transformed women’s cricket from a sport that once required public support to survive into a captivating spectacle, according to West Indies white-ball captain and Mumbai all-rounder Hayley Matthews.

The 26-year-old, who won the 2016 T20 World Cup with the West Indies, claimed that T20 leagues like the WPL have fostered global exposure and contributed to the development of the women’s game.

“We have a product that’s entertaining and we have these skills that people want to see us play cricket,” Matthews told Reuters. “I think once upon a time, women’s cricket was probably like, “Come and watch the game to support the women,” she said.

The game will naturally grow if you get the chance to play these leagues, have all the games televised, and have spectators and supporters.

Women have a lot of opportunities to develop in cricket, and I believe competitions like the WPL provide a platform for the sport to develop. It teaches players about the game and demonstrates our level of skill in women’s cricket.
