On, or off? Will the newly promoted Premier League teams stay in this form all three times?

This weekend saw another five, six wins for Burnley, Leeds, and Sunderland, and 12 points clear of the relegation zone for the Black Cats.

The trio now has 38 points, which is the third-best total between teams entering the Championship since the Premier League first started.

Wolves, who are currently in the bottom three, have started the season horribly with just two points after nine games, a position that no one has ever managed to escape relegation.

West Ham have had their worst season start in 52 years, scoring four goals.

Nottingham Forest, who haven’t scored a league goal in 440 minutes, are one point ahead.

What data are gathered from this quiz?

Sunderland’s “unbelievable start”

Sunderland undoubtedly delivered the biggest surprise this season with a 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday. They will finish fourth in the top flight on October after falling short of the Championship play-off final defeat in May.

The Black Cats have now equaled their best Premier League start, matching their total from 1999-2000, with 17 points from nine games.

In the same number of games, only five newly promoted teams have scored more points than Sunderland. In 2000, Sunderland themselves, along with all five, were able to survive relegation.

Former Watford captain Troy Deeney called it “an unbelievable start that was well earned.”

Sunderland fans would tell you, “You’re crazy, if you said that a few months ago.”

Anyone who is sincere enough to say that Sunderland never expected this well, so full credit to them, ex-Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Home form assisting Leeds

With a 2-1 victory over West Ham on Friday, Leeds, who won the Championship last year, move 11 points after nine games.

No team has ever scored that many points after 12 games in the Premier League since the 2015-16 season, and the news will cheer them up.

After winning the game-tough defeat against the struggling Hammers, Leeds manager Daniel Farke said, “I think every team in this league is challenging.” Overall, I’m pleased with the three points, though a little frustrated by the ending.

“It was crucial to maintain that momentum and make teams’ arrivals difficult.”

Elland Road has started to become a reality in Farke’s plans to make it a fortress.

At home, Leeds has won two, drawn two, and lost one game so far.

“extremely competitive” – Parker in Burnley

With a stunning 3-2 victory over Wolves on Sunday, Burnley moved five points clear of the drop zone.

Only 19 of the 460 teams currently achieving this feat have been relegated.

Lyle Foster’s 95th-minute winner secured the Clarets’ first successive Premier League victories since 2022, when the Clarets took a 2-0 lead at Wolves.

Burnley manager Scott Parker stated on BBC Match of the Day that “back-to-back wins is pretty significant for us and our first away win.”

It will help us grow as a team, and it will inspire confidence in us. A significant success for us.

This year, we have been very competitive. In other games, we conceded in the dying seconds, and we scored in those moments. Today, we probably have the right to do that.
