Jonathan Bailey, the first openly gay man to be named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, has revealed it is an honor to be the first to do so.
Jonathan Bailey has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive. He becomes the first ever openly gay man to be crowned the accolade and succeeds last year’s awardee John Krasinski.
The actor, 37, is seeing his year go from strength to strength after starring in Jurassic World Rebirth. He featured alongside Scarlett Johansson in the flick. And he is also set to hit the big screen in the Wicked sequel, Wicked: For Good.
He was also recognized by People as the Sexiest Man, to cap off an impressive calendar year. On Monday, Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show announced his accolade.

Jimmy unveiled the two upcoming cover designs for the issue during the presentation. Jonathan acknowledged that he is still “giggling” about his face being the cover and called the win “the honour of a lifetime.”
Jonathan discussed how he became the first openly gay man to hold the title. He told the host, “I’m kind of thrilled that People magazine invited someone in to bestow this honor on someone who can really cherish the value of a sexy man,”
And he further explained how he responded to the news in the article of the publication. He said, “It’s a huge honor.”
“I’m incredibly happy, of course. It is also completely absurd. I’m very excited for some friends and family to learn that it’s been a secret.
The actor, who won praise for playing Prince Fiyero in Wicked in September, revealed in September that he has decided to put his acting career on hold while working on his new LGBTQ+ charity.
The actor, who also appears in films like Bridgerton and Fellow Travelers, announced that he is leaving Hollywood to concentrate on a cause he founded in 2024. The Shameless Fund aims to assist LGBTQ+ people all over the world in living “freely and authentically.”
Speaking to GQ at the time, he said: “My acting career has been amazing and mind-blowing. But with everything happening in the world right now, I’ve decided to stop acting for a bit.”
He continued, “Over the next few months, I’ll be focusing on staffing and making sure we get all the right people in all the right places.”
Jonathan also emphasized how little charitable funding is provided to the LGBTQ+ community, continuing, “There is this statistic: only 1p of every £100 raised in the UK goes to the LGBTQ+ community. The Shameless Fund is exactly that, and you really have to dig to find solutions.
As well as his commitment to LGBTQ+ equality, his charitable work extends beyond his own set-up. He is a long-time supporter of Just Like Us, the charity behind the UK’s annual School Diversity Week.
The actor previously remarked, “School Diversity Week is a fantastic initiative that fosters the inclusive environment that every child deserves.” I wish I had School Diversity Week to remind me that it was acceptable to be myself as a child.
