I am very familiar with Fletch, as everyone in football refers to him.
He has worked for United since he was a youngster, has played for Sir Alex Ferguson, and has played for some of the club’s most illustrious players.
But once the game against Burnley begins, none of that will matter, so why do I think he is a capable top coach in the making? He played for me when his impact on and off the field was incredible, and that is how it all dates.

Sir Alex used to tell me that he would always choose him for United’s biggest Champions League games away from home because he was a clear winner who gave everything in each game.
Sir Alex asserted that he had always played Fletch in midfield if it was going to be really tough and he needed a player who would be absolutely relentless.
Because he was a fantastic lad, he said you could always count on him in a game and on the other end of the field as well.
I was anticipating him telling me that while talking to a fellow Scot, but I soon learned that he was telling the truth.

He “led by example.”
People inquire about the players I’ve worked with and the people who have influenced my teams. I liked strong characters, and there were some big influences in the dressing room at all of my clubs.
One of those was unquestionably Fletch. He set the example of a gentleman and a top professional. He didn’t yell or holler, but he was a genius at this.
While I was West Brom manager, he played for all the Premier League teams I chose while he had been suffering from illness before he joined us.
He started all but one of those 91 games for us, and during that time, he had the opportunity to start 86 of our previous league games, which was an all-time high for any active player at the time.
His leadership helped the Albion to reach the top 10 in the Premier League despite his long-awaited glory days at United being over.
Although the team had some excellent players and numerous other strong characters, I’m sure not one of them would have had a negative opinion of their captain.
At United, it was obvious that he would need both leadership and management skills. He was a great kid to have around off the field, but he also didn’t shy away from me.

If United decide to take a deep breath and give Fletch a fair chance to demonstrate his abilities, I believe he can do so with the right circumstances and given the opportunity.
He is unwavering about making difficult decisions, knowing what to do next, and being unafraid to do so.
Another young Scot seized control of Old Trafford many years ago. Because the club’s members backed him, Sir Alex was given backing. Fletch might be the answer to all of United’s fans’ longings in terms of time.
We need more British managers in the Premier League, so I was happy to see Liam Rosenior take the job this week.

From managers then to current first-team coaches
This week, United is not the only major team to sack its manager. Christmas and the upcoming year have hardly passed, and football management has been deceived by the goodwill spirit!
What makes a good manager or coach in this day and age, especially as the changes at Celtic and Chelsea have caused a tidal wave of disappointment in some areas and joy in others.
Since my time, when management was all about total control and covered all aspects of football, the game has dramatically changed.
Without a doubt, clubs today, whether large or small, operate under a system where managers have morphed into two distinct positions: first-team coach and director of football.
Because of this, most clubs now only mandate that the first-team coach instruct the first team, as required by law. The director of football now has complete control over all other responsibilities besides that one.
What is required of a first-team coach at a prestigious club today to succeed? First, you must win games!
Your relationship with the director of football must be completely unbreakable, as we’ve seen from the incidents at United and Chelsea, for a variety of reasons, but more so for the benefit of the coach.
They must make sure that the club’s players are hired, understand who the club is, and foster a strong relationship between all the various football-related departments, particularly the academy or medical staff, so that they can influence their success.
By doing this, you create a club where everyone is aware of their role in this process from beginning to end.
That makes it possible for the club to turn into a winning one, but there are as many things you need both off the field and on it for that to happen.
Whoever gets the job at Old Trafford and anywhere else will face those difficulties.
