After visiting Lisbon to meet with the Portuguese club, Jose Mourinho claims to be on the verge of becoming the manager of Benfica.
Bruno Lage, who was fired on Tuesday following their Champions League home defeat against Qarabag, will be replaced by Mourinho.
The 62-year-old was fired by Fenerbahce after only one month of being unemployed.
“Benfica formally inquired about my interest. Who can stop Benfica from winning? After landing in Lisbon, Mourinho said, “Not me,” to reporters.
Mourinho left after a disagreement with the club president and started his managerial career with Benfica in 2000. He only managed 10 games.
Between 2002 and 2004, he won six awards, including the Champions League in 2003-2004.
Mourinho has held the offices of Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and Fenerbahce since leaving his birthplace in 2004.
Two days after Benfica knocked the Turkish team out of the Champions League play-offs on August 29, he left the club.
Chelsea would face Mourinho in the Champions League on September 30 at Stamford Bridge if Benfica appoints him.
