The search for the next manager of Manchester United is ongoing.

Ruben Amorim was fired on Monday after only 14 months in charge after making the club’s hierarchy apologies.

United are sixth in the Premier League and likely to play in the Champions League next year.

Before United appoints a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, Darren Fletcher is understood to be in charge for the next few games according to BBC Sport.

Competitors for the Premier League

Should United choose to have an experienced Premier League manager after Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick, and now Amorim’s failed as managers?

Unai Emery has done a fantastic job of bringing Aston Villa back into the top this season from the brink of relegation to Europe.

Villa are only six points clear of Arsenal as the leaders in the table.

Would Emery’s mixed spell as the Gunners’ commander, however, have an impact on him?

After guiding unfancied Bournemouth to ninth place last season, Andoni Iraola will have fans as well.

Although the Cherries are currently without a win in 11 games, Iraola would have to take United down if the chance came.

Eddie Howe’s long quest for a major trophy was ended by winning the Carabao Cup, while Oliver Glasner‘s contract at Crystal Palace expired last year.

connections between Man and Utd?

Could an internal appointment be United’s next permanent manager?

Fletcher, a former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach, spent 11 years there before becoming a manager.

Former United midfielder Michael Carrick is a clear favorite.

After being fired from his first managerial position at Middlesbrough in June, he is no longer employed.

The 44-year-old also played for Tottenham and West Ham before retiring in 2018. He made 463 appearances for United during that time.

It’s unknown whether he will be unable to work by the summer.

Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, is another potential candidate with United connections.

The 39-year-old former United assistant first-team coach impressed in his first managerial position at Ipswich.

He helped them to reach the Premier League after receiving back-to-back promotions, and he has now placed them third in the Championship this year following their relegation from last year.

His case would undoubtedly be strengthened by a second promotion this season.

What about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s return as United’s manager and striker?

Although it’s unlikely, he is still a fan favorite despite not having a job.

Does he deserve more credit for the work he did between 2018 and 2021 given how disappointed he was?

From the continent

United could target a large number of well-known names in Europe.

Mauricio Pochettino, the head of the USA, is one name United have consistently been linked with.

United’s preference to wait for a permanent appointment would seem to suit him well given that the US will host the World Cup this summer.

Ex-Barcelona boss Xavi is a name that is frequently on people’s minds.

Since he hasn’t worked since 2024, the chance to play in the Premier League would be appealing.

Luis Enrique, a former Barcelona manager, delivered the Champions League to Paris St-Germain last year as part of the Treble.

He still leads PSG, but he has already triumphed with the French champions.

Is Zinedine Zidane still unemployed four years after leaving Real Madrid, but will he still work there one day?

Roberto de Zerbi, who left Brighton to pursue a career in England, is a top-notch performer at Marseille.

Gareth Southgate has long been associated with United, but he made a decision before Amorim’s appointment by declaring he would not work in coaching for at least a year after leaving England.

Could he be prepared for a return after leaving management in July 2024?

In eight years, Southgate led England to two European Championship titles, two World Cup semi-finals, and a 102-game winning streak.

Although Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of United, is a fan, Southgate hasn’t managed at the club level since leaving Middlesbrough 16 years ago.
