Mark Fowler, a legend of EastEnders, was a part of some dramatic plots while he was on the soap, and he is still remembered 22 years later.
Todd Carty, who is now 60, re-entered Albert Square in the early 1990s and played the original character. When Martin Fowler’s brother Mark returned from his youth, he was much more mature and a completely different person. Due to his HIV diagnosis, Mark had to concentrate on his health, which had caused the change.
He struggled to deal with the limitations and illness that came with being in the Square throughout. After deciding to leave Walford, Mark made the decision to enjoy the trip of a lifetime before his untimely passing. Mark euthanized his family and friends in 2003 and kept in touch with them as he traveled.
His brother Martin learned that Mark had passed away from a non-Hodgkins lymphoma-related form a year later. As Mark dispelled myths about his own diagnosis and the wider virus and how it can affect people, the groundbreaking plot helped the BBC soap raise awareness of HIV and AIDS to the national audience.

Two decades after his time on the show, Todd is still acting. He looked completely off Mark at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester last year. While wearing a loose zip-up jacket and blue jeans, he sported a moustache and glasses. Todd’s journey in the entertainment industry began as Tucker Jenkins in Grange Hill – a role that garnered so much popularity that it led to his own spin-off series, Tucker’s Luck, which aired from 1983 to 1985.
The actor has also made appearances on shows like Heartbeat, Holby City, and Doctors. Following his EastEnders tenure, Todd ventured into the world of reality television. His outstanding performance at Dancing on Ice in 2009, which left partner Susie Lipanova adrift for the first time, is still a standout moment. Then, in 2014, he showcased his culinary skills on Celebrity MasterChef and took part in Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning.
Todd has a history of performing on stage. He portrayed Captain Hook in Peter Pan at Rickmansworth’s Watersmeet Theatre from December 2019 to January 2020, as well as Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap in Manchester’s Lowry Theatre last spring. Todd acted alongside Gwyneth Strong, a fellow EastEnders star, and Only Fools and Horses.

Since he has been married to actress and writer Dina Clarkin since 1990, his personal life is heavily connected to the acting world. The couple’s romance dates back to their childhood, with Todd sharing with the Mirror in 2005: “Yes, it’s a real love story. Both of our mothers were friends and we were just kids. After Dina’s mother began to accompany me to auditions, we became friends and we would visit their home for tea.
Dina’s family moved out of London and the pair didn’t see each other for a decade. Speaking of the moment they were reunited Todd said: “I was at a family do when Dina walked in and I just thought, ‘ God, you’re beautiful’. She suddenly returned to my life as a stunning 19-year-old, and I fell in love with her head-first. It was wonderful”. The couple now share two sons, James and Thomas.
