Following controversy over comments the host made about Charlie Kirk’s tragic shooting, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night program.
The network pulled the program after several ABC-affiliated stations objected to comments Kimmel made during Monday and Tuesday shows.
The comedian claimed that many people in MAGA land are actively pursuing profits from Charlie Kirk’s murder.
After Kirk American right-wing activist Kirk was shot on September 10 at an event on a campus at Utah University, he made a statement. Tyler Robinson, 22, was charged with aggravated murder after the conservative activist’s death, and he appeared in court on Tuesday.
Kimmel compared the actions of FBI director Kash Patel to a young person who had not read the book “BSing his way through an oral report” and claimed that the president’s response to Kirk’s death “is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend.”

Kimmel then made fun of JD Vance’s choice to host Kirk’s podcast the following night.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr also expressed his resentment over the comments, which suggested the FCC could revoke affiliate licenses if Kimmel wasn’t punished. Hollywood stars backed Kimmel, with Sophia Bush claiming that the “First Amendment doesn’t exist in America anymore” while actor Ben Stiller claimed in a post on X the move “isn’t right” and actress Sophia Bush supporting the move.
CBS, a rival network, announced in July that it would stop hosting The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in May for financial reasons. Colbert has criticized Donald Trump.
Kimmel’s comments were “offensive and insensitive at a crucial time in our national political discourse,” according to Nexstar Communications Group, which owns more than 20 ABC affiliates.
Sinclair, which runs ABC’s largest number of affiliates, made similar assertions.
The company announced in a statement posted to X that a special would be broadcast on Friday in honor of Charlie Kirk and that Kimmel should formally apologize to Kirk’s family.
