After serving the show for almost 20 years as a result of a suspension for a derogatory remark made on video, Jamie Borthwick was suspended.

News of Jamie Borthwick being dropped from EastEnders has come as a shock to soap fans.

The 31-year-old actor has portrayed the character Jay Brown since 2006. On Saturday, The Mirror exclusively revealed that the BBC star will not be returning to Albert Square.

BBC Studios, the production company behind the soap, stated, “We can confirm that Jamie Borthwick will not be returning to EastEnders. We do not comment on individual matters.”

This was unanticipated, especially since earlier this month it was reported that Jamie would be returning to the show after being suspended for using a disparaging term about people with disabilities.

The suspension news broke in June, six months after Jamie appeared on Strictly Come Dancing. The incident reportedly occurred during the BBC dance show’s live episode filmed at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom as part of the 22nd series.

According to reports, Jamie was allegedly referred to as a “disabled person” when describing Blackpool residents. He allegedly used the term in the video, which was later shared with one of his friends.

Jamie apologized sincerely and heartfeltly for the words I used in the video, which showed my journey through Blackpool week on Strictly, when it first appeared.

I apologize sincerely for any offence or upset caused by my actions. There is no justification for my ignorance of the offensive term I used and its definition.

“That completely reflects that on me. I am now aware that I directed the phrase in the manner that I did, and that I am deeply embarrassed to have used it. It was incorrect.

Jamie Borthwick’s character has participated in a number of significant plotlines throughout his time on the show, including the passing of his father, Jase Dyer (played by Stephen Lord), and his relationship with Lola Pearce, who sadly passed away from cancer in May 2023.

At the 2023 Inside Soap Awards, Borthwick won the Best Actor award along with Loving and Losing Lola, which was based on Lola Pearce-Brown’s diagnosis of a brain tumor.
