In a region west of the Nuseirat refugee camp in southern Gaza, near Deir el-Balah, families who are fleeing the Israeli military’s relentless bombardment have begun setting up makeshift tents in miserable conditions.
The majority of them have experienced repeated home invasion.
What would I say if I told you, “We are thrown in the streets, like”? like canines? We are not canines like. Mohammed Maarouf, 50, addressed The Associated Press news agency in front of his tent, “Dogs are]treated] better than us.”
Maarouf and his nine-person family had already fled Beit Lahiya, a town in northern Gaza. We lack homes, they say. He claimed that “we are on the streets.”
Mohammed Abu Warda, a different displaced Palestinian, claimed to have fled Jabalia, which is also in northern Gaza, and was heading for Gaza City’s western side.
He claimed, however, that he was unsure of the destination. We left our region because the nearby danger was high, according to Abu Warda.
“I’m hoping I can find a place to set up a tent,” the statement reads. “Everything here is pointless and unsafe. Everywhere the Israelis attack,
As part of a growing campaign to seize the city and displac the roughly one million Palestinians living there, Israeli forces have been consistently bombarding Gaza City since early August.
The largest urban center in the country was designated a “combat zone” on Friday, according to the Israeli military, which announced the “initial stages” of its offensive.
One million Palestinians could be forced to relocate to concentration camps in southern Gaza as a result of the new operation, according to UNRWA.
According to hospital sources, at least 71 Palestinians were killed Saturday during Israeli attacks in Gaza.
Of that, 41 people were killed in Gaza City alone, including 11 Palestinians who were killed while waiting for bread from ovens that served displaced people’s communities.
In a densely populated area of the city, Israeli attacks on a residential apartment block have also claimed the lives of at least seven Palestinians. Rescuers were seen attempting to locate any survivors by digging through the rubble to find bodies.
“Gaza City has seen an increase in the Israeli army’s attacks. The foundations of civilian life in the area have been undermined by the destruction of homes and community centers, according to Hani Mahmoud of Al Jazeera.
“This is occurring as people experience famine, forced starvation, and dehydration.” A catastrophic humanitarian crisis is being caused by various things.
Israel’s plans for a forced mass expulsion were also raised by the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Saturday.
In a statement, ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger described the plan as “not only unfeasible but incomprehensible,” adding that “it is impossible that a mass evacuation of Gaza City could ever be done in a way that is safe and dignified in the present.”
However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has shown no signs of putting an end to the military offensive despite Israel’s international condemnation of its occupation of Gaza City.
Israeli journalist Gideon Levy claimed that the overarching strategy Israel has for Gaza amounts to ethnic cleansing.
According to Levy, the plan is to force everyone in Gaza to leave their homes, lock them in those concentration camps, and then decide whether to live there permanently or leave the Gaza Strip.
Levy added that Israel will only stop its offensive if US President Donald Trump decides that “enough is enough” and imposes sanctions on the nation. Levy also criticized the Israeli government’s behavior as “outrageous.”
Since Israel’s conflict with Gaza started in October 2023, the US has given it billions of dollars in military support. Washington has also shielded its top ally from international pressure to hold accountable at the UN and in other international forums.
