Jimmy Butler, a forward for the Golden State Warriors, has torn his right knee’s anterior cruciate ligament. He will miss the rest of the season.

Butler, 36, was injured on Monday in the Warriors’ 135-112 victory over the Miami Heat.

His agent Bernie Lee confirmed the report to ESPN, calling it a “gut punch” for Butler and the Warriors.

The Warriors are eighth in the Western Conference with a 25-win and 19-loss record, and they have won 12 of their previous 16 games.

The play-in tournament features the top six teams from each conference, with those who are ranked seventh to tenth competing against one another.

Before the 5 February trade deadline, the Warriors must make a decision regarding how to approach the rest of their season and the market.

The Warriors have won four NBA titles since 2015 under the direction of coach Steve Kerr and have been a fading force since their most recent triumph in 2022.

In order to support another championship bid, the Warriors must now consider whether to seek out additional reinforcements or rebuild for the future after purchasing Butler from the Heat in February 2025.

Lee is confident Butler, a six-time All-Star, will recover from this setback and win his first NBA title while the Warriors are still working until the end of the 2026-27 season.
