In stage six of the Vuelta a Espana, Jay Vine won the race, coming in second place overall.

After disbanding a 10-man group that had already escaped early on the 172 km route across the Pyrenees from Olot in Catalonia to Pal in Andorra, Vine (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) led a solo attack in the final 20 kilometers.

The 29-year-old Australian from Andorra won the Vuelta stage third time.

Being able to win in Andorra in front of my son and wife is unbelievable and incredibly motivating, said Vine.

“I pretty well understand these roads. La Comella is my favorite climb in Andorra because I’m from just down the hill.

Vine’s Bahrain Victorious rider jumped from 26th place to first place in the overall classification, but Norway’s Traeen, 30 finished 54 seconds behind him.

Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) placed third in the GC standings and placed third in the first summit finish of the race.

Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France champion, lost the lead in the overall standings and now leads Traeen by 2 minutes 33 seconds.

James Shaw of Great Britain (EF Education-Easy Post) placed sixth overall on Thursday, ranking 21st overall.
