Atifete Jahjaga, the former head of the Kosovo Republic, stressed the importance of promoting civil rights in Nigeria on Wednesday.

As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Day on October 1 at the Covenant Nation Church in Iganmu, Lagos, Jahjaga addressed the audience there at the 2025 The Platform Nigeria.

According to her, the most populous country in Africa requires independent, civil rights-preserving institutions.

She said, “We must be bold enough to adapt to changing times and demonstrate readiness and commitment.”

We should strive to establish institutions that are impartial and have checks and balances, as well as ones that are resistant to the growing extremist ideology and those that protect our civic rights and liberties.

We can say that democracy is at work once we accomplish this. But we must not be demoralized until then. We must never give in or even allow populist or nationalist ideologies to dominate our country’s people with unfulfilled promises.

She urged all Nigerians to take part in decision-making, particularly women.

She believes that Nigerian women and men should coexist according to democratic principles.
