Victoria Coren Mitchell slammed for branding Only Connect stars idiots

Viewers have criticized Victoria Coren Mitchell for making a comment about Only Connect contestants, calling her actions “rude” and demanding an apology.

A television quiz show called Only Connect features three contestants who compete to make connections between seemingly unrelated clues. The show, which is hosted by Victoria, challenges viewers to recognize connections and patterns among various categories.

In a statement, Victoria called some contestants “idiots” for failing to reach the final. She said: “98% of viewers don’t even understand the questions on this show, they’re not even sure we’re broadcasting in English. Some people only watch when their cat is sat nearby. Therefore, third place in the actual competition is a remarkable accomplishment for the people involved. They’re just idiots compared to the people in the final”.

Introducing the contestants, she added: “And those idiots are..”. Some contestants viewed her remark as funny, but others appeared to be irate. Viewers quickly took to Twitter to share their reactions as a result of the awkward situation. One user wrote: “Not many quizzers would laugh at being called idiots. #OnlyConnect”. One person continued, “It’s rude of Victoria Coren Mitchell to call them idiots.” Can’t imagine those smiles were real. She should apologise! #OnlyConnect. “.

Victoria has previously been criticized for a joke that some people thought was too extreme. Back in December, she sparked similar reactions with a comment about her BBC co-star. The 52-year-old actress made light of her “secret” affection after making a joke that was so crude that it left viewers with their jaws on the floor after making reference to an old joke about her rumoured crush on former politician and journalist Michael Portillo, 71.

She began her concluding monologue by saying, “Coming up next on BBC Two is another episode in that wonderful series sponsored by the RSPB, where celebrities look after birds before handing them on to other celebrities to raise awareness of struggling avian numbers.”

Although some may have been unsure of her direction with the joke, Victoria quickly clarified: “I have chosen to join in myself because I have so enjoyed watching the big names of BBC Two pass their feathered dependents onto other presenters.” She added: “Tonight, I will eagerly be taking several swallows from Michael Portillo”.

One person admitted the joke to her and said it left her “somewhat traumatized,” but another was so shocked that they were unsure whether they had heard her correctly. They then asked: “Did I imagine she said that? ” Another confused person said, “Love Victoria Choren but have always hated the Portillo jokes. ” The reactions didn’t stop there either. Sexist. Cheap. Not funny. Tonight’s was really unsuitable for a family quiz show”.

One viewer even made a quick comparison between her comment and Greg Wallace’s career-ending comments, which suggests that Victoria Coren’s innuendo is a bit similar to what happened in the end. That’s fine with me. Innuendo was part of being British. What distinguishes what VC said from what Greg Wallace said, though?

It wasn’t all backlash, though, and Victoria did score brownie points with some viewers. One person wrote on X: “that was close to the knuckle Victoria! Bloody brilliant! #swallows Best line on TV since…. Your last one”! Another said, “Phenomenal Portillo gag in true ISIHAC style at the end of last night’s #OnlyConnect. Kudos, Victoria Coren, for the deadpan delivery”.
