The Argentina Football Association has banned former Estudiantes president Juan Sebastian Veron from playing for six months because he disobeyed the formation of Rosario Central as the new champion.
The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder and his Estudiantes teammates were protesting Rosario’s inclusion as “League Champion” as a result of an FA change last week’s rule change.
The top division of Argentina, which includes Apertura and Clausura, has two tournaments, and Angel di Maria’s Rosario finished the regular season with a total of 66 points, four more than Boca Juniors.
The team with the most points scored in the previous rules only received a spot in the Copa Libertadores in accordance with previous rules.
Each tournament moves into a knockout stage after a 16-game league, with Platense winning the Apertura.
Estudiantes protested prior to their 1-0 victory over Rosario in Clausura’s last-16 game on Sunday.
Veron received a “six-month suspension from all football-related activities,” and players who “engaged in the reprehensible conduct” received two game suspensions from the following season.
On Saturday, Estudiantes will face Central Cordoba in the Clausura quarter-final.
