The former model who launched a TV, and then later radio career admitted that he sometimes disappoints wife Tess Daly with his fashion choices
BBC Radio 2’s Vernon Kay admits that he got a bit of a dressing-down from his wife after popping out to a DIY shop this weekend.
But, he added, it was after an incident that reminded him of his powerful connection with the BBC Radio 2 audience.
Speaking on his show earlier today, Vernon confessed: “I had a lovely incident at our local DIY shop yesterday. I went to get some bits – you know how you do that ‘Sunday’ thing and you go to your local DIY shop… I was walking through the aisles and there was this lovely couple, I think they were going through floor tiles.
“I’ve got my hoodie up, I’ve got my bobble hat on, I’m in my joggers – I’ve not looked in the mirror, I’ve just walked out of the door.”
Vernon said that he was dressed in a way that his wife, who he still playfully calls “Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly,” would be quite annoyed. She’d say “You went out like that? Did anyone see you?” Vernon admitted.
But, Vernon continued, it came as part of a reminder of just how wide Radio 2’s reach can be: “So I’m in B&Q,” he related, “and as I’m walking past this couple, maybe five strides past, I hear a ‘See you on Monday morning, Vern!’ And I said ‘Yep, tune in every morning.’
“He didn’t look at me, I didn’t look at him. It was brilliant. It was just like two mates from school, or work, who see each other on a regular basis every day of the week.”
Vernon’s wife Tess isn’t working at present, but after sensationally quitting Strictly Come Dancing at the end of last year she’s reportedly eyeing a number of exciting opportunities.
The mum-of-two had been at the helm of Strictly since it first hit screens 21 years ago alongside Sir Bruce Forsyth, before he stepped down and pal Claudia Winkelman replaced him in 2014.
Now, Tess has opened up about what’s next on her agenda, including launching her own sportswear line, NAIA Active, and hinted at more telly work “in the pipeline.”
“I have so much life experience under my belt, and I enjoy the wisdom that comes with that,” she began, about life in her 50s. “There’s a calmness that comes with it that is very welcome.”
Speaking to Hello! Magazine about the activewear brand, which comes after launching swimwear label NAIA Beach with her close friend in 2021, Tess revealed she had been working 15-hour days until Christmas, with the launch being “months in the making”.
“We’re thrilled with the results. It makes all the hard work worthwhile, because this is a bona fide business. This is not an endorsement deal. This is my baby.”
She went on to tease that she’s looking forward to future TV projects after her Strictly exit, hinting: “There are a couple in the pipeline.”
She added: “I love working in television because I genuinely love people.”
Following her emotional exit on Strictly, in which Tess and Claudia held back tears as they were surprised with a message from Queen Camilla, Tess took to Instagram with a behind-the-scenes video of the final.
She said: “So that’s a wrap. What an incredible Final – fitting for what, for me, has been an absolutely brilliant series.
“Strictly is a show that is made with love, where joy is the currency and the only agenda. That love is down to every single member of the brilliant team that makes it, because to none of them is it just a job. It is a gift, and it is truly treasured.
“I will be forever grateful for the unforgettable years I have spent sharing this magical show with you. I’ll miss the Strictly viewers, because they are the very best, the most loyal and supportive, and as passionate about the show as I have always been.
