Vernon Kay, a presenter for I’m a Celebrity, made an appearance on the twentieth season of CBS Radio 2… Get Me Out of Here, Everyone! finishing in 2020 behind Jordan North and Giovanna Fletcher
Vernon Kay revealed he was snubbed by a veteran BBC presenter when he appeared on a hit ITV show. Vernon, 51, appeared on the twentieth series I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2020.
The radio presenter finished the show in third place behind then Radio 1 presenter Jordan North and eventual Queen of the Jungle Giovanna Fletcher. The series was one of two to be filmed at Gwrych Castle in Wales, due to the coronavirus restrictions at the time.
Shortly after the series Vernon joined the BBC as cover for Rylan Clark’s Saturday show. He subsequently went on to act as a stand-in for Steve Wright’s afternoon show before landing the mid-morning slot with the departure of Ken Bruce in 2023.
It was when standing in for former X Factor contestant Rylan that Vernon says he encountered veteran DJ Tony Blackburn in the BBC studios. While Vernon was complimentary of 82-year-old Tony, he revealed he voted for Jordan when the pair appeared on I’m A Celeb.
Tony was in when I first started listening to Radio 2 on a regular basis, Vernon said, “I think I was covering for Rylan at the time, and Tony was knocking around.” I saw you on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, hello, hello, yeah! ’
I said, “Yeah, I enjoyed it, you also enjoyed it,” I replied, “Yeah, I enjoyed it.” I won, but I shouldn’t mention it. I didn’t vote for you because I thought you were great.
Like, Tony, cheers. I appreciate it, buddy. I did, however, vote for the opposing candidate. Thank you, mate. Tony Blackburn is a legend. ”
The presenter was then referred to as “one of the greats,” according to Vernon. He continued, “With Tony, you can just sit and take it in like when you sit with the greats, Bob Harris, Gary [Davies], and Mark [Radcliffe] do.
They have done it, followed the path, and have a wealth of knowledge, they say. Tony was known for playing records on a record player while also speaking. I am hardly able to communicate while using a pen. ”
Tony had to “flip flop” with turntables in his early days on BBC Radio, according to Vernon. In the 1960s, Tony launched his career in pirate radio, appearing on Radio London and Radio Caroline.
When Radio 1 first launched on September 30, 1967, he was the first DJ to be heard on it. Later, he pursued both a singing and television career.
Tomorrow (January 21), Tony and Scott Mills will make an appearance on Radio 2 with Scott Mills. Meanwhile, Vernon recently revealed that his wife Tess Daly was concerned about him after visiting a DIY store on Sunday.
Yesterday, I had a lovely incident at our neighborhood DIY store. You know how to do that “Sunday” thing, so I went to my neighborhood DIY store to get some bits. This lovely couple, I believe they were stepping through floor tiles, was passing through the aisles as I approached.
I’ve just walked out of the door with my hoodie on, my bobble hat on, and I’m wearing my joggers. I haven’t looked in the mirror. “
Vernon explained he was dressed in a manner that would likely irritate his wife, whom he still affectionately refers to as ” Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Dal y.” She’d ask, “You went out like that? Did anyone see you?” Vernon confessed.
Even so, Vernon continued, it served as a reminder of just how large a portion of Radio 2’s audience is. Q,” he recalled, “and as I’m passing this couple, maybe five strides past, I hear the message “See you on Monday morning, Vern!” And I responded, “Yep, tune in every morning.” ‘
