Strictly host Tess Daly was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) this week for her services to broadcasting, an accolade she described as the “greatest honour”

Vernon Kay made an awkward royal blunder while sharing details about his wife Tess Daly’s MBE ceremony. In a broadcast of his BBC Radio 2 show, which aired just one day after Tess’ big day, Vernon shared his memories from the event.

As Breakfast Show host Scott Mills handed over the airwaves, Vernon discussed the investiture ceremony he attended alongside Tess and their two children yesterday.

During the event, Tess, known for her hosting role on Strictly Come Dancing, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to broadcasting, an accolade she described as the “greatest honour”.

In a light-hearted exchange as they transitioned into Vernon’s show, Scott declared that he hoped his colleague had a “lovely day”, to which the presenter thanked him and confirmed that it was indeed “amazing”.

However, as he set out to provide some context to the conversation, Vernon made an on-air gaffe before admitting he was “lying”. He said: “We were at Buckingham Palace…that’s why….no, I’m lying; we were at Windsor Castle.”

He jokingly continued in a posh accent: “So many royal establishments that I’ve visited today”, as Scott mockingly chimed in: “I don’t even know which royal establishment I was in”.

Maintaining the accent, Vernon added that he was getting “confused”, while Scott pointed out that it looked like a “special day” from the photos, to which Vernon confirmed that “it really was”.

Scott and Vernon both said “well done” to Tess on air, as Vernon described the occasion as “beautiful”. Finally, Scott shared a compliment with his colleague, noting how Vernon looked “very smart” for the ceremony.

Tess, who last month announced (alongside co-host Claudia Winkleman ) that she would be stepping away from Strictly, said she would dedicate the accolade to her father, “because he’d be so proud of his daughter meeting the King, in a castle”, reports the BBC.

Talking to reporters afterwards, she said: “This is probably the greatest honour of my career and it still feels quite surreal to be honest with you. I’ve been working in television for 25 years, and it’s a job I absolutely love to do.

“It was a real privilege to be in a room of people who have made a difference in their communities, who have built incredible careers. It was a very inspiring environment.”

In other news, Vernon, who is set to host Children in Need on Friday (November 14), has declared that he’s “absolutely thrilled” to be joining a new celebrity quiz show, dubbed Do You Know Your Place?, in 2026.

Also featuring The Traitors ‘ Paul Gorton, each episode of the show will see Vernon test three celebrity guests’ UK knowledge.
