When Vernon Kay presented BBC Radio 2 in the Park to Michelle Visage, he was in a cheeky mood, yelling that he would be “fired” after making a flirty comment.

BBC Radio 2’s Vernon Kay, 51, joked that he was about to get “the sack” after engaging in some cheeky flirtation with Radio 2 in the Park co-host Michelle Visage, 56, who is friends with his Strictly presenter wife, Tess Daly.

For Radio 2’s acclaimed annual event, which featured performers Marti Pellow, pop sensation Jessie J, and local lad Olly Murs, the pair had been broadcasting live from Chelmsford’s Hylands Park.

Michelle had been making observations about the sweltering temperatures at the park on Saturday, beginning with her career in the girl group Seduction before becoming a judge of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Before giving Michelle the task of jotting down his compliment and posting it to herself, Vernon playfully responded, “But wherever you are is always hot”.

He advised putting it in an envelope and returning it home. You can open that envelope when you return home. And you are aware of what it will say? You’re hot”.

Vernon apologised to his saucy remarks, saying, “I just got fired,” which drew laughter from former Strictly contestant Michelle.

While Vernon was denigrating the boot, comedian Josh Widdecombe, who plays on his radio, was spouting ideas for new things. Josh bragged that he could play Damon Albarn’s lead singer in the band’s Parklife role after taking over the Phil Daniels role for a performance of Blur’s Parklife at the festival.

Fearne Cotton was spotted attempting to persuade a few other Radio 2 in the Park employees to dance while also trying to entice some security guards to join in the Macarena. She did, however, only manage to “get a little twitchy” at the end.

Vernon was in high spirits at the BBC event, expressing his relief after an “anxious” time at home. At the end of last month, he shared with fans that he couldn’t “stop crying” after finally receiving his daughter Amber’s GCSE results.

The 51-year-old presenter admitted to having “weeks of anxiety” in the weeks leading up to results day, telling fellow DJ Scott Mills, “I can’t stop crying, Scott, I can’t stop crying. Today is GCSE results day, and we are all good.

He continued to make his point about the significance of a student’s GCSE results, saying, “I think GCSEs are more significant than A-levels.” Because of the difficulty of GCSEs, which are the first major step, “well it’s not a step, it’s a stride,” you can kind of fudge and blag a little bit because you have a little bit of something about you from A-levels onward.

The girls have seen me crying this morning because our eldest, Amber getting her GCSE results, and I’ve watched it more than a dozen times, and I keep welling up, so please allow me today, please.
