Venus Williams Gets Australian Open Wildcard Aged 45

Venus Williams, the oldest woman to play at the season-opening Grand Slam, became the seventh-time major singles champion at the age of 45 on Friday.

For the first time since 2021, the American will compete in the main draw at Melbourne Park, having only played a select few singles matches recently.

Williams stated, “I’m looking forward to competing in Australia this summer.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has impacted my career in such great ways,” I said.

Williams has also won two US Opens and five times at Wimbledon.

In 2003 and 2017, she placed third overall at the Australian Open.

She will become the oldest woman to compete at the Australian Open since Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round of 2015.

Williams, a four-time Australian Open doubles champion, will begin her preparations for the Auckland Classic on January 18 through February 1 after taking a 16-month break from her previous best-year debut.

Prior to Melbourne, she will travel to the Hobart International.

Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, described Williams’ continued presence as “incredible”

It will be cool to see her back in action because she is a legend of the sport, she said.

The length of her career is incredible. I admired her because I was anticipating seeing her back on the court.
