According to Pierluigi Collina, the head of referee of Fifa, using video assistant referee checks to determine corners won’t prevent matches.

Domestic leagues have opposed the idea of having VAR review the awarding of corners.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab), which decides the game’s laws, rejected the FIFA proposal at an October meeting.

However, the United States, Mexico, and Canada will test the idea at the 2026 World Cup finals.

No delay is the main requirement. When asked about potential delays at a briefing in Washington DC on Thursday, Collina said at a briefing that there was a physiological delay because when a corner was given, typically you had to wait until the two center-backs came up.

“Typically, the attackers are ready in 10-15 seconds,” they say. Everyone in these 10-15 seconds has the proof that the kick started correctly, and to me, it’s difficult to understand if they have the opportunity to determine that [the decision is incorrect.]

Why do we need to keep our heads hidden in the sand so that no corner kick is missed?

Former chairman of the Ifab board, Mark Bullingham, the head of the Football Association, has previously stated his opposition to the change.

Collina cited the importance of making wise decisions as the primary justification for using VAR on corners.

The former Italian referee said, “I think we should all have as the goal to make sound decisions on the field of play.”

It would be unfortunate if a player’s decision-making in a competition was based solely on their actions on the field of play.

This is what led us to consider technology-based referee support 13 and 14 years ago. Therefore, in my opinion, if we can get this, it’s positive.

Because I believe the goal would be worthwhile, we discuss and will see what will happen.

At the following Ifab meeting in January, we’ll have more discussion about the measures.
