Use Of Force In APC Shameful, Tinubu Should Caution Obasa – GRV

The Lagos State House of Assembly was desecrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, according to Governor Governor George Rhodes-V of the Labour Party (LP).

On Monday, the Lagos LP 2023 governorship candidate said on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, “The APC kind of normalized this idea of using intimidation and force to get their way, and that is what we say today.

“An attempt to intimidate the speaker to resign and step aside using armed men and the threat of violence, and that is unacceptable”, he said.

Armed security officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services stormed the hallowed chamber earlier on Monday, preventing Mojisola Meranda, the speaker, from gaining entry until hours later. As lawmakers approved a vote of confidence in her, she became tearful and emotional when she finally presided over plenary.

Following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Assembly speaker and Meranda’s victory, the state legislature has been engaged in a leadership conflict for weeks.

Obasa has insisted that his removal was unlawful and has taken legal action in court after over 32 pro-Meranda lawmakers in the 40-member Assembly pledged their loyalty to the first female speaker.

The former LP governorship candidate urged Obasa to be wary of the state assembly’s invasion by armed security personnel and issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu and the APC Governors’ Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos.

Rhodes-Vivour said, “His (Obasa’s) leaders in the GAC, the president, should call him to order. Lagunas State has advanced considerably. We don’t want to go to new lows. These situations can be handled in a civilized manner. His party ought to order him.

He argued that anyone trying to take control of the House for whatever political agenda should be ashamed and that the assembly complex’s drama was an assault on the legislature.

“Armed men entering the assembly are a major understatement and a disgrace to our politics in Lagos.” It’s completely disgraceful”, he said.
