US Mulling Travel Ban Affecting 43 Countries – Report

US Mulling Travel Ban Affecting 43 Countries – Report

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a new travel ban that would apply to citizens of dozens of nations, according to a report released Friday by the New York Times.

According to anonymous officials, the draft list included 43 nations that were broken down into three different travel restrictions.

Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen would all be in the red list of nations whose citizens would be completely barred from entering the US.

Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan would all have severe visa restrictions.

The New York Times reported that “affluent business travelers may be permitted to enter in those circumstances, but not those who are on tourist or immigrant visas.”

To be granted a visa, citizens from nations on the orange list would also need to go through in-person interviews.

A further 22 nations on a yellow list would need 60 days to address US concerns, or they could be moved up to a more stringent category.

The State Department developed the list several weeks ago, and changes were likely to be made by the time it arrived, according to the New York Times, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive internal discussions.

Trump frozen almost all foreign aid and the United States’ refugee admissions program as one of his first acts in office.

Trump’s decision to impose a “Muslim ban” on his first term, similar to the “Muslim ban” he had ordered the US government to identify nations whose citizens should be prohibited from entering on security grounds.

In response to the ban, which in 2017 targeted people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, it sparked international outcry and received court rulings against it.
