Under-fire Scarlets boss Peel will ‘fight hard’

Dwayne Peel, the under-pressure head coach, says he is confident enough to clear the United Rugby Championship (URC) table for the Scarlets.

The 2025-2026 campaign has had a torrid start, with only two victories in eight appearances for the quarter-finalists of last year.

After the autumn break, Scarlets appeared to have recovered, but they are currently suffering from disappointing derby defeats from Ospreys and Dragons.

“Everyone is feeling that hurt,” Peel asserted.

There is a lot of rugby to be played this season, and we need to regain some momentum, according to a rocket scientist. “We’re obviously not happy with where we sit in the table,” he said.

Dragons’ defeat “will not define us.”

Jubilant Dragons fans chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” at Rodney Parade last Thursday, mocking Peel.

“I get that, and you lose a few games,” Peel said.

“You do have periods where you’re on top and you get periods where you lose games, and we’ve lost two games,” he said.

“Get back on the horse and make sure we improve,” the quote reads. We must fight hard, and we must not let that week define us.

In the face of all the uncertainty and budget cuts in Welsh rugby, Peel acknowledged that results and performances have not been up to Scarlets’ standards this season.

He said, “We’ve been transitioning a team over the past few seasons.”

We had to make a significant change, transitioning some senior internationals and transitioning some younger players.

We were aware that this project wasn’t going to be a three-month turnaround.

Are we content with this season’s state of affairs? No. Do you like how we came out of last season? Yes, we probably had the desired destination, but this season we haven’t really started. We’ve had some high-profile injuries, and there are reasons for that.
