U-17 Women’s W/Cup: Italy Thump Nigeria’s Flamingos 4-0

Following a 4-0 defeat to Italy on Tuesday, Nigeria has been eliminated from the 2025 U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Italians scored three second-half goals to earn a place in the quarter-finals, which made the Flamingos one of the best third-placed teams to advance to the Round of 16.

In the first half, Nigeria asserted themselves well, pressing the Italians for a goal. Despite receiving a strike from Anna Copelli, the game ended 1-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Caterina Venturelli and Giulia Robino gave the Italians a double in the 58th minute, while Giulia Robino made it 3-0. On a festive night in Italy, Rachele Giudici added a fourth in the 93rd minute, sealing the Flamingos’ exit.

After defeating Samoa 4-0, Nigeria made it to Round 16. With victories like that, they were the best runners-up after earlier falling to France and Canada with 1 / 1 and 1 / 1.

The Flamingos’ best performance in competition history came in the 2022 edition, placing them third.

After defeating Morocco 6-1, reigning champions North Korea made it to the next round. Maissane Ferkous scored the winning goal after a rebound for the North Africans.

In the second half, Brazil won 3-0 to go home. In the quarter-finals, the South Americans will face Canada’s and Zambia’s winner.

The Netherlands’ 7-6 penalty win over the USA earned them the title of the night’s hero, goalkeeper Maren Groothoff.
