According to authorities, two high-speed trains collided in southern Spain, killing at least 21 people.
A train derailed near Adamuz on Sunday, according to Spain’s ADIF rail body, crossing onto the other track and heading east from coastal Malaga to the capital, Madrid. It derailed into an oncoming train before colliding with it.

At least 21 people have been confirmed dead, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry. 25 people were “seriously” hurt, according to an earlier statement from Andalusia’s emergency services. The crash site had five mobile intensive care units, four emergency critical care units, and numerous ambulances waiting there.
According to Juanma Moreno, president of Andalusia’s regional government, the on-site services were focused on stabilizing the injured before moving them to hospitals.
He continued, “Our support and solidarity for all those who have been affected.”
On-site coordination between ADIF personnel and emergency services was also underway.
According to the rail body, services from Cordoba, Sevilla, Malaga, and Huelva are expected to be unavailable until “at least” Monday, but trains from the Andalusia region to Madrid have been suspended.
Salvador Jimenez, a journalist for the state-run broadcaster RTVE, claimed to have been a passenger on the Malaga train.
He claimed that the final carriage of the train, which had just landed on the tracks, turned completely onto its side as it passed through its final two carriages.
According to Jimenez, the train seemed to be experiencing an “earthquake” moments prior to the collision.
