Tommy Fleetwood of England eagles two times in a second-round 65 to share the lead over Connecticut.
Justin Thomas, the 34-year-old American who shot a first-round 66, and world number one Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas, the other two, are nine under par.
At TPC River Highlands, Fleetwood, who is chasing his first PGA Tour title, carded a modestly par opening half before rising to the top six holes.
He eagled the par-five 13th by finding the green in two shots, slammed a 10-foot putt, and then holing out of the fairway with a 30-yard shot to pick up two more strokes after eagleing the green on the par-four 14.
He took the lead after Jason Day, an Australian, went one shot back with a 12-foot birdie putt at par three on 16th.
Fleetwood told Sky Sports, “I’ve been having a good season, and I felt like my game was in good shape going into the US Open last week.”
“For whatever reason, I’ll never understand the game; I played really poorly, but there is always another week of golf, and this week is one big week.”
I felt inspired to do whatever it takes to improve you for the upcoming weeks, and I’m pleased with how I’ve fared this week.
In his six-under 64, Thomas recorded five birdies straightaway, and Scheffler recorded a 69 to finish at the top of the leaderboard.
Rory McIlroy, the second-round leader, was two shots clear of the lead, which frustrated him when he shot a one-over 71 to finish fourth overall.
