Sam Thompson and Paddy McGuinness, both from TV, collaborated to deliver a special package to Wigan.

As they attempted to deliver goods in a cutting-edge electric lorry, Paddy McGuinness and Sam Thompson decided to switch the spotlight to high-visibility jackets. However, as Sam quickly realized there was much more going on than he had anticipated as he soon realised that driver Paddy was on the journey.

By piloting one of the new electric heavy goods vehicles in Amazon’s delivery network, which was loaded with donations for The Multibank charity, TV legends were booked to provide both laughter and essential support to families in need. Sam served as his eager but unqualified “Driver’s Mate” while Paddy, who has a valid HGV driving license, took the wheel of the electric truck.

Paddy explained the experience, “I’ve driven a lot of electric vehicles, but this was my first time driving an electric HGV.”

“Making this special Amazon delivery to families who need The Multibank’s support this Christmas, while also doing our bit for the environment, was a no-brainer for me”

However, Sam quickly discovered that this position requires significantly more lifting and loading in addition to chit-chat and tea breaks.

Paddy continued, “Love the lad to bits, but any more of his Driver’s Mate skills will need to be improved.” The better for everyone and the planet the more deliveries we can make using these kinds of vehicles.

Supplies were delivered to The Brick Multibank in Wigan by Paddy and Sam. By redistributing surplus goods donated by businesses to those who were most in need, the charitable scheme, which Amazon established in 2022, was intended to assist families and individuals who were in poverty.

More than 12 million essential items have been distributed to over 800,000 families so far in the UK’s six Multibank distribution centers.

One of the first deliveries of electric HGVs from the UK’s largest-ever order of electric vehicles last month, the journey of Paddy and Sam was made in an all-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 truck, which marked a crucial step in Amazon’s pledge to decarbonize its transport network.

Sam Thompson said: “When I got the call up from Amazon to be Paddy’s mate, I jumped at the idea. I thought we’d catch up, grab brunch, maybe belt out some karaoke. Being a ‘Driver’s Mate’ is a lot harder than it looks.

Even though Paddy can’t get his head around the god tier car snack of a Green Pepperami and a raw mushroom, Evie made it special.

It’s amazing to see the work Amazon is doing to increase the sustainability of all of our deliveries, jokes aside.
