TUC Decries Cost Of Living, Seeks Increase In Allowances

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has demanded an increase in the workers’ compensation and the country’s high living costs.

Festus Osifo, the TUC’s president, and Nuhu Toro, its general secretary, made the call in a statement on Monday. They want workers to receive more social security benefits, including paying more allowances, to help counteract rising inflation.

Congress is still deeply concerned about the harsh economic realities that workers are confronting in 2026, the statement read in part.

In accordance with the current Labour law, it demanded that governments at all levels review and enhance workers’ allowances as a temporary relief measure.

Additionally, it urged workers to stay calm and pledge their support for creating a labor movement that supports both Nigeria and workers.

The union pledged to continue to support the Congress in its efforts to lobby the government and other labor-related organizations for policies that are worker-friendly.

The TUC urges governments at all levels to urgently review and improve workers’ allowances as a temporary relief measure in order to ensure that a new National Minimum Wage in 2027 is fully implemented in accordance with the Labour Act in light of persistent inflation and rising living costs.

Without adequate protection and support, Nigerian workers cannot bear the cost of economic reforms.

“Unity is still our greatest strength, brothers and sisters. Let’s reaffirm our resolve, strengthened our solidarity, and unwavering commitment to the ideals that unite us in 2026.
