After a powerful earthquake off the Russian coast, tsunami alerts were issued in several nations, with waves measuring 3 to 4 meters (19.8 to 13 feet) recorded in Russia’s far east.
Early on Wednesday, the regional minister for emergency situations announced that a tsunami measuring 3 to 4 meters high had been recorded in some of Russia’s Kamchatka region.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake of magnitude 8.7 struck 136 kilometers (85 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the far east of Russia.
The country was advised of tsunami-related waves that could reach a metre (3. 3 ft) in the country by Japan’s meteorological agency.
The state of Hawaii was immediately placed on a “tsunami watch” by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The quake may be strong enough to “generate destructive waves” in Hawaii, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency in a social media post.
No injuries or damage have been reported so far.
