Due to an Ontario political advertisement that claimed former US President Ronald Reagan was saying tariffs would spell disaster, US President Donald Trump has stated that the US and Canada will not resume trade talks.
Trump claimed on Friday that the two nations would not resume trade talks even though Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had apologized to him for the advertisement.
He said, “I like him a lot, but what they did was wrong.” Because the commercial was a fake, “He apologised for what they did with it.”
Carney did not respond to e-mails for comment right away.
Trump abruptly ended negotiations last week with an apology to the Canadian province of Ontario, adding that he was putting an additional 10% on tariffs on Canada.
Reagan, a Republican icon, claimed that tariffs on foreign goods cause trade wars and job losses in the Ontario government’s advertisement.
Reagan was well-known for backing free trade and markets.
Trump has called the US platform advertisement “fake” and criticized it for running on US platforms. The team of Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who created the minute-long advertisement, appears to have spliced sections of Reagan’s speech together, as Al Jazeera reported earlier, but the statements are all lines that Reagan used to make his speech.
For the purpose of furthering trade talks between the two nations, Ford has since put a stop to the advertisements.
Carney added that Canada is prepared to meet for negotiations.
The US has traditionally been Canada’s biggest trading partner, exporting roughly 75% of its goods to its southern neighbor. Trump’s tariffs have upended that trade, and some of the highest tariffs have been applied to Canada.
