Trump says he will put 100% tariff on all foreign films

Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has announced plans to impose a 100 percent tariff on foreign movies, claiming that competition from abroad is causing Hollywood to “very quickly die.”

Trump claimed in a social media post on Sunday that he had instructed the US Trade Representative and the US Department of Commerce to halt the “any and all” filmmaking in “foreign lands” immediately.

“Our filmmakers and studios are drawn away from the United States by various incentives offered by other countries. On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Hollywood and many other U.S. cities are in ruins.

“This is a coordinated effort by other nations, and it poses a threat to national security,” the statement continues. It includes propaganda and messaging in addition to everything else.

Trump did not provide more details about how a tariff would actually work, including whether it would apply to Hollywood films that had multiple countries under production.

Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, and Jon Voight have been named as “special ambassadors” tasked with restoring Hollywood’s lost business to other countries. Trump’s announcement comes after his appointment in January.

Trump intended to start a “Golden Age of Hollywood” by predicting that the actors would be “my eyes and ears.”

Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 actors and writers’ strike, Hollywood has recently experienced difficult business conditions.

According to Gower Street Analytics, Hollywood studios made about $30 billion in revenue last year, down about 7% from 2023.
