Tottenham won the Europa League title with a 1-0 win over Manchester United, earning it its first European title in more than four decades.
Tottenham won its first major title since winning the English League Cup in 2008, and it won its first European title since 1984 when it won the second UEFA Cup, or the equivalent of the Europa League.
At the conclusion of the opening period of the season, Spurs will finish near the bottom of the Premier League standings, and Brennan Johnson scored the winner on Wednesday.
Spurs will now be eligible for the Champions League next season, and the title relieves manager Ange Postecoglou, who had struggled all year to keep his team on track.
Six years after Tottenham lost in the Champions League final to Liverpool, the victory comes as a result.
Ruben Amorim’s United team is now in 16th place in the Premier League, just ahead of Tottenham, under increased pressure from the defeat. Next season, the club won’t compete in any European competitions.
On Wednesday, United almost had an equalizer when Rasmus Hojlund’s header was saved at the goal line by Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven.
A difficult save from Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was caused by a header from Luke Shaw well into stoppage time.

Before Tottenham scored in the 42nd minute following a cross from Pape Sarr into the area, the game had been evenly played and neither team had many good chances to score.
Shaw ricocheted the ball off and fell in front of Johnson, who appeared to have squandered it just wide.
In front of a crowd of nearly 50 000 at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium, United continued to advance after conceding, but they were unable to score the equaliser.

United’s most recent triumph was at the 2017 Europa League under Jose Mourinho, who won the 2024 FA Cup.
The Red Devils have lost all four of their matches this season against Tottenham, and they have won just six of those against Postecoglou.
In the 2009 League Cup, when United defeated Tottenham 4-1 on penalties after drawing 0-0, the two teams had previously met in a final.
