Denmark vs. Scotland: World Cup qualifying

Date: Friday, September 5th, 2019 Kick-off: 19:45 BST

Josh Doig was called up as cover for the opening World Cup qualifiers in Denmark and Belarus, and Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston have both been called out of the Scotland squad.

Both Celtic defenders appeared to have been injured in the Champions League play-off defeat suffered by Kairat Almaty four days prior to Sunday’s goalless draw against Rangers.

Head coach Steve Clarke has only two left-back options left, with Max Johnston and Aaron Hickey serving as the other right-back options. Sassuolo’s Doig is the other option.

While Doig only holds a senior cap, left-back for Liverpool and Scotland, Andy Robertson, who has alternated between playing left-back for the national team and left-wing, has recently flitted between his natural position and left-wing for the national team.

Hickey, 23, returned from a nearly two-year absence due to serious hamstring issues.

Clarke described Hickey as “good to go” when he announced the squad last week. It’s a different conversation whether he’s good enough to spend 90 minutes playing two games. He will be managed by us.

Celtic defender Anthony Ralston has been capped five times for ScotlandSNS
