Threatened with ICE raids, US groups consider cancelling Dia de los Muertos

The number of people being held by ICE has increased by about 59 percent over the past year, from 37, 395 in September 2024 to 59, 762 last month.

Deportations have increased as well, with 527, 000 removals reported since Trump’s second term.

In a statement released in October, White House spokesman Tricia McLaughlin declared that “the Trump Administration is on pace to break records.”

Trump has threatened to deploy federal troops in California as part of his effort to carry out his deportation drive and crackdown on crime.

In response to protests against his immigration policies, he has already sent 4, 000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in June.

He announced earlier this month that he planned to send military forces to San Francisco, but he ultimately decided to stop the “surge.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara is one of the institutions that suspended the traditional procession known as the Calenda Da de los Muertos this year, which is located about six hours south of San Francisco.

The event has previously featured an altar for the dead and Oaxacan cuisine as well as music and dances from the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
