Donald Trump, the president of the United States, was the target of a mass protest in Greenland. In response to growing concerns about a US takeover, they carried protest signs, waved their national flag, and chanted “Greenland is not for sale.”
News broke that Trump announced a 10% import tax from February on goods from eight European nations as part of their retaliation for their opposition to US control of the Arctic island as they marched from the small city center of Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, to the US consulate on Saturday.
Trump has long argued that Denmark should own the strategically located, mineral-rich island, which is self-governing territory of the US. He increased his calls a day after Nicolas Maduro was abducted and removed by the US military earlier this month.
Greenlanders of all ages walked to the consulate in Nuuk while listening to traditional music.
Former Greenland parliamentarian Tillie Martinussen expressed hope that the Trump administration will “abandon this crazy idea.”
As chants rang out in the background, “They started out sort of touting themselves as our friends and allies,” she said, “they started out by saying they wanted to make Greenland better for us than the Danes would.” They are now simply threatening us straight away.
She argued that the fight for the autonomy of NATO and Greenland was more crucial than tariff concerns, but she made it clear that the potential economic impact was still present.
