Ben Shephard has a successful TV career, including stints on Good Morning Britain and This Morning, but the “crushing” blow that came his way early in his career proved to be “hugely important.”
TV star Ben Shephard revealed how he received the “crushing” news that he was getting axed from a TV show as the news left him “floored”.
The 51-year-old is now one of Britain’s most recognisable TV presenters, working for shows including This Morning, Good Morning Britain and GMTV.
But things didn’t always run so smoothly for the TV star. Towards the start of his career his friend Andi Peters helped him get a job with Channel 4.
When he was called into a meeting with a powerful executive he had never met before, Ben claimed on the podcast that he was “loving the job” and that “all seemed to be going great.”
Ben, we’ve been watching you for a few months, and we just don’t think you’re very good, she said as he sat him down. You won’t ever be good at this, in our opinion. Therefore, we will terminate your contract.
Ben claimed that his and his now-wife Annie had just purchased a flat, making them feel more depressed.
He continued, “That was my first experience with television, realizing how subjective and brutal it can be at times.”
Because Annie and I recently purchased a flat and the responsibilities that come with that, “first time is always the most painful, scary, intimidating, and terrifying,” to put it simply, is the most painful, scary, and terrifying.
The father-of-two recalls telling the Channel 4 executive that he hopes to one day disprove her.
It is fair to say that he was successful in that desire. In 2000, he was given a job at Entertainment Today, a segment on GMTV, shortly after suffering the agony of being fired.
In the end, he spent ten years there. His other credits include Ninja Warrior UK, This Morning, Tipping Point, and Good Morning Britain. Ben even briefly hosted What’s Cooking on Channel 4 before leaving for a second time.
The presenter has appeared in Soccer Aid seven times, and he holds the Guinness World Record for smashing the most pumpkins in a minute.
Ben claimed that the experience ultimately proved to be “incredibly important” for him. He stated on the podcast, “I think how significant that moment was. It was absolutely incredible at the time, but it was never going to be anything.
“Crushing. And I can go back and go because I know that you are only ever as good as your most recent link. You can never be certain that what has been said will actually be done.
