Thelin ‘accepts’ Aberdeen sacking after winless run

With the team currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership and without a win in five games, Aberdeen parted ways with Scottish Cup winner Jimmy Thelin.

The Swede, 47, said, “I take my share of responsibility” and “I accept this decision.”

Eight months after he helped Pittodrie win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years by beating Celtic on penalties, his departure comes eight months later.

The Dons lost their second straight match to the Scottish Premiership at Falkirk on Saturday, losing to Celtic and Sparta Prague in Conference League play. They also lost to Dundee United, who were also drawn, and lost to the Celtic.

Pittodrie’s assistant, Christer Persson, is also leaving.

And Thelin continued, “My time as manager at Aberdeen is over.” I accept this choice with a lot of respect for this illustrious organization.

Results determine the nature of a profession, and as a result, I assume all of the blame.

According to Aberdeen, “results and performances have not been comparable to the investment made in the first-team squad and football operation.”

And chairman Dave Cormack expressed his gratitude to Jimmy and Christer for winning the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years in May.

As only one of six Aberdeen managers to win the Scottish Cup in our storied 122-year history, Jimmy will forever be remembered for bringing these memories back to Aberdeen, and he will be forever associated with them.

However, the former Elfsborg head coach had more time thanks to a rebound in his domestic performance.

Aberdeen finished second in the Conference League league with just two points, while Thelin won just eight of the possible 30 games since Hampden won. Rangers take on Aberdeen next Sunday.

The Dons were consigned to the Conference League after losing to AEK Larnaca and Noah after losing in a game with two legs against Romanian side FCSB. The defensive issues Aberdeen faced in Europe this season were exemplified by AEK Athens’ 6-0 defeat and Sparta Prague’s 3-0 defeat.

Since Derek McInnes’ eight-year tenure ended in 2021, Cormack has served as the club’s chairman for the past four appointments. The club are now looking for their fifth manager.

Despite having a slightly lower win rate, Thelin managed to stay in the game for two more games than his predecessor Barry Robson.

Prior to Robson’s dismissal in early 2024 and Neil Warnock’s brief tenure later that year, Leven, who will be assisted by Craig Hinchliffe and sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel, oversaw the first team. In charge that year, Leven won six of his 12 games.
