Claudia Winkleman previously admitted it is “so heartbreaking” watching her daughter dream of life away from home, as the Traitors host opened up about the realities of motherhood
Claudia Winkleman has opened up about a poignant moment with her daughter, describing the bittersweet emotions of watching her child dream of independence. The Traitors host, known for her warmth and humour on screen, revealed the family admission during a candid conversation about motherhood with her own mum, Eve Pollard.
The presenter, 53, who has been married to film producer Kris Thykier since 2000, has three children: Jake, Matilda and Arthur. While Winkleman has occasionally shared glimpses of her home life, she has previously spoken on the Wellbeing of Women charity’s YouTube channel about the emotional tug-of-war many parents experience as their children begin imagining lives beyond the family home.
Speaking to her mother, Claudia said: “I remember shouting at you, ‘I don’t like you,’ and you replied back, ‘you’re not supposed to’. I would say I was 15, and it was such a relief. I was like, ‘oh, thank goodness’. So all of these feelings are normal, but it was still safe.
“You’re going to think I’m an idiot. You’re going to think I’m annoying. You’re going to think I’m embarrassing. I’m going to drive you mad. You’re not going to like me very much. You might lie in bed, listening to your Walkman, daydreaming about living somewhere else, you know.”
The moment struck a chord as Winkleman reflected on her own daughter’s burgeoning independence. “My daughter says to me, ‘Do you think, Mommy, one day I might live in Liverpool?’ She’s obsessed with Liverpool at the moment,” she said. “She goes, ‘I might live in Liverpool, and not only that, mum, we might have a tiny balcony.’
“I mean, it’s so heartbreaking to me, the idea that she wouldn’t want to just live in my little nook (on my shoulder), you know?”
Winkleman went on to describe tender memories of her daughter seeking comfort as a child. “She used to sleep with her head there all the time, and somehow she’s got this fantasy that she and her friend are going to move to the north of England,” she said.
The presenter explained that the conversation highlighted the bittersweet nature of watching children grow up — the excitement of seeing them imagine independent futures, combined with the sadness of knowing those close, early years cannot last forever.
Married to Thykier, whose film credits include Layer Cake and Kick-Ass, Winkleman has balanced a high-profile television career with family life. The couple are known for keeping their private lives largely out of the public eye, while continuing to support their children’s ambitions.
