The queen is back after Brat summer. New Zealand pop star Lorde dropped her first new single since 2021 at an intimate Washington Square Park concert, and fans are now flocked to it.

What Was That? singer drops a song for the summer, which means we’re in for a Lorde summer.

You’ve heard of Brat Summer, now it’s time for Lorde summer. After an agonising four-year wait, the two-time GRAMMY winner has just dropped her new single What Was That – and fans are going crazy.

Since Lorde teased the release of her new single What Was That on TikTok last month, her fanbase has been buzzing with anticipation. After a clip of Lorde performing at Washington Square Park on April 23 that went viral on Tiktok, the excitement has increased. She performed her new song to a small crowd of screaming fans while standing on a small wooden stage. We’re still in disbelief, according to one video caption.

Lorde, who is best known for her smash-hit “Royals,” has established herself as music royalty. The New Zealander won the 2014 Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year. She has since gained notoriety for her distinctive layered sound and catchy lyrics, which are reflected in later top hits like Green Light from 2017.

And TikTok claims that TikTok’s most recent release is not disappointing. Lorde can be seen walking down the road in a white shirt and jeans as the song’s bass slowly picks up, starting with a grey street surrounded by brick houses. In a TikTok video, a fan said, “You already know she’s the queen of buildups,” before jumping up and down at the chorus drop.

Another ecstatic TikTok fan, who was also dancing in their room, declared, “THE QUEEN OF POP IS BACK.” Another stated, “LORDE SUMMERRR IS HERE.”

One user remarked, “The way its already a hit… oh my god.” I already have goosebumps after a minute and a half of the next album. Another person referred to this as “my summer.”

The Lorde has risen to save us, according to former X-Factor actors Jedward and David. Another proverb furthered the religious metaphor, saying, “The pope died so that the Lorde rose.”

Additionally, TikTokkers have speculated that Charli XCX, the “queen of Brat,” was teasing a “lorde summer” at Coachella this year. After Lorde performed her song “Girl, so confusing,” which was about the pair’s tense friendship, videos of the audience going crazy quickly spread like wildfire.

Other notable figures in the music industry have praised the star’s abilities. Notably, David Bowie’s passing was cited as calling the singer the “future of music.”

His long time pianist Mike Garson told fans during a Periscope Q&A: “David really liked Lorde, and he felt like she was the future of music, and they had a few wonderful moments together.” This came after Lorde was chosen to perform a Bowie tribute at the 2016 BRIT awards.
