Rick Buckler, the drummer for the Jam, passed away this week after a brief illness.

From the time the Jam was formed in the early 1970s until their breakup in the early 1980s, the musician, who was born in Woking, was the Jam’s former drummer. Along with bandmates Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, he is renowned for songs like Town Called Malice.

Due to his “ongoing health issues,” Rick was forced to cancel a spoken word tour earlier this month. A statement from Rick and his team, which was posted on Facebook on February 1st, read: “Rick and his team want all the fans of Rick and The Jam to be aware that Rick has been advised to stop touring his spoken word events scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

Rick has been extremely moved by the volume of people who have booked to see the shows, but he has been advised to rest, recover, and strengthen his physical fortitude in order to handle UK tour dates.

Rick “was really excited to bring his updated “in conversation” show to life in so many new venues, both for devoted fans and new audiences. Once again thank you for you continued love, support and understanding. As time goes on, we’ll keep you informed. Rick anticipates seeing you all in the future. Although he had health issues, his cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Paul paid tribute in a post which read: “I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. In my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking, I’m thinking back to all of us who are currently practicing. To all the bars and clubs we frequented as children, hoping to break records. What a journey! What we created endured the test of time and far beyond our wildest dreams. I extend my sincere sympathies to everyone in my family and friends.

Bruce commented: “I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good man and great drummer, whose creative drum patterns influenced the music we sang. I’m pleased that we got to work together as much as we did. In this difficult time, Leslie and his family are in my thoughts.

Fans took to social media to express their condolences after hearing about the news. One user posted: “RIP Rick Buckler. Thank you for all the enjoyable times and memorable memories. Another commented: “So sad to hear the news of Rick Buckler of the Jam passing. The best band I’ve ever seen live, and still the best I’ve ever seen. RIP Rick”.
