Adolescence star Erin Doherty attended Hazelwick School in Three Bridges and has now said that comedian Romesh Ranganathan, a maths teacher, was her Head of Sixth Form

Erin Doherty has revealed a surprising link to a popular comedian – and said that while she hasn’t seen him since she was a teen, she would love to meet him now that they are both famous.

The 33-year-old actress, known for her role as Princess Anne in the third and fourth seasons of the Netflix drama The Crown and her portrayal of child psychologist Briony Ariston in Adolescence, said 47-year-old Romesh Ranganathan worked as a maths teacher and was her Head of Sixth Form at Hazelwick School in Three Bridges.

Erin, who is now promoting season two of Disney+ series A Thousand Blows, revealed she was once pulled into a meeting with “Mr Ranganathan” alongside her dad as she had failed to read the material and had been kicked out of her English Literature. Erin made the confession during a joint interview with her co-star Malachi Kirby on Sky News.

She said: “You know the comedian Romesh Ranganathan? He was my head of year. How cool is that? So yeah he was like a maths teacher but I never had him for maths. My sister did. But he was my head of sixth form, my head of year.”

The star explained: “Basically I got kicked off of English lit because I didn’t read any of the books and they pulled me, and I think it was my dad, in. So we had a chat with Romesh Ranganathan when he was just Mr Ranganathan.

“And yeah I had like a chat with Mr Ranganathan to get kicked off of English lit. So that’s my little weird crossing of paths.”

Asked whether she has ever met Romesh since becoming famous, Erin responded: “No and I want to! But yeah it’s kind of cool.” Romesh and Erin aren’t the only famous faces who have been at Hazelwick School, as Gareth Southgate, Dan Walker and Chico also attended it.

Set in late 19th-century London, A Thousand Blows follows the true story of Jamaican immigrant Hezekiah Moscow (played by Malachi Kirby), who is pulled into the brutal world of bare-knuckle boxing. It doesn’t take long before he forms a rivalry with ruthless boxer Henry ‘Sugar’ Goodson (Stephen Graham) and a complicated dynamic with Forty Elephants gang leader Mary Carr (played by Erin).

A Thousand Blows initially made its debut last year and yesterday, it returned for season two on Disney+. The drama is inspired by the true story of Hezekiah, Sugar and Mary who all existed in the 1880s. Labelling the show as “absolutely epic”, a viewer said: “A Thousand Blows is an adrenaline-fueled, character-driven masterpiece that brings the brutal world of bare-knuckle boxing in 19th-century East London to life with raw intensity.
