Tom Skinner, a television star, reported a shocking account of a Greggs bakery theft.
The high street favourite, with over 2, 500 outlets, has been grappling with shoplifting issues in recent times. Greggs insists that these are individual actions and not a company-wide directive, despite the fact that some stores have used padlocks to secure their beverage cabinets.
Tom, famed for his appearance on the BBC’s ‘ The Apprentice’, expressed his astonishment on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. While out working this morning, he said, “Stood in the queue at Greggs to buy two sausage rolls and two coffees.” While in the queue, 4 separate people walked into the shop, helped themselves to sandwiches, drinks, snacks the lot! I didn’t think the staff seemed interested, and I didn’t want to get into a fight with someone over a ham and cheese baguette.
He added: “I don’t know people’s finances, but what I did notice was that every single one of them had brand new trainers on and one was even sporting a Moncler coat! Why do people believe it’s acceptable to simply take what they want, and what has happened to this nation?

“Sad to see, and I hope it doesn’t affect small independent bakeries in the UK as well. Greggs, you sold me for £12, but you must have had £40 worth of goods stolen in ten minutes, according to the Express.
Greggs store representatives have previously addressed the growing theft rate in their stores. Greggs, which was established in 1951, has grown to be a staple on UK high streets by offering a range of baked goods as well as expanding its menu to include salads and rice bowls.
This change coincides with local council initiatives like those in Newcastle upon Tyne, where obesity rates are rising, where local councils have put restrictions on new fast-food outlets. Interestingly, existing Greggs branches are exempt from these prohibitions due to their diverse menu options.
Shoplifting is a problem that Greggs alone cannot address; it is a sign of a wider trend that is affecting UK retailers. For example, shops in London reported a record-breaking £15 million in losses owing to shoplifting in 2023.
With plans to open up to 160 new locations in 2024, strategically focusing on locations like gas stations and retail parks, Greggs continues to be committed to its growth and customer service despite these obstacles. Greggs maintains that it is developing a comprehensive approach that places a high priority on creating a warm environment for all customers, despite the fact that individual stores may use specific tactics to combat theft.
