Only a small number of contestants have been welcomed into the 1% Club in the three years since the show debuted.
Each episode of the ITV show, which launched in 2022, sees 100 contestants face a series of “logic and common sense” based questions. Those who make it to the final question have a chance of winning a prize fund of up to £100,000.
Contestants start the quiz, hosted by Lee Mack, with £1,000 each, which goes into the prize pot if they get a question wrong or exchange it for a pass. The pot can be reduced if anyone chooses to walk away with their £1,000 though.
It’s understood that no player has yet won the maximum £100,000. The biggest win on the 1% Club so far has been £99,000, with that figure won by two contestants already. One of them secured the prize in a recently aired episode.
Last Saturday’s episode saw Matthew Lock reach the 1% question – thought to be the hardest round – alongside four other finalists. Lee offered them the chance to walk away with a share of £10,000 for reaching the final, or they could risk it by taking on the 1% question for the bigger prize fund.

The host told them: “You win a share of £10,000 [for making it this far]. But now you all face a dilemma. You can choose to leave the show tonight and take your share, which works out at £2,000, or you can risk it all by attempting our 1% question. Get it right and you win your share of everything in the prize pot, which stands at £99,000.”
Everyone decided to play on. They then faced the final question which read: “If you remove all the underlined letters from the sentence below, what word can be spelt if you rearrange all of the remaining letters? ANIMAL TOSHUNINSTAMPEDE.” The players were given 30 seconds to answer it.
Two contestants didn’t put an answer, whilst it was suggested that two others had given “random words” as their responses. Matthew however revealed that he had put ‘elephant’ as his answer when the timer ended for the round.

It was later announced that he had answered correctly, with Lee saying: “Congratulations, Matthew. You are the winner and get everything in the prize pot.” Confirming the amount, he told him: “You’ve just won £99,000.”
Discussing the round, Matthew said that he “saw” the answer “straight away”. He said that he was in shock over having won the prize fund though, with him telling presenter Lee that he “nearly went out” in two previous rounds.
Matthew isn’t the first person to have won £99,000 on the 1% Club. Daniel O’Halloran also won that figure when he competed on the show in an episode that aired in 2023. His final question had focused on numbers instead of letters.
The 1% Club continues on Saturday night on ITV, ITVX, STV and STV Player from 8.30pm.
