According to Thailand’s military, Thai and Cambodian troops clashed in a disputed region of their border.
Cambodian troops opened fire in an area close to the disputed Ta Moan Thom temple, which is located on the two countries’ shared border in Oddar Meanchey Province, early on Thursday, according to the Thai military’s statement.
Before sending troops there with heavy weapons, Cambodia claimed to have deployed a surveillance drone.
One Cambodian soldier was killed in a military clashes that erupted in May due to a long-running border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
The two sides have been trading barbs and tit-for-trade retaliatory measures, including the closure of border crossings, because of the ongoing border dispute.
Additionally, Cambodia has prohibited Thailand’s imports of fruit and vegetables as well as fuel and gas.
A Thai soldier was most recently injured and lost his right leg in a landmine incident on Wednesday.
Thailand’s ruling Pheu Thai Party announced in response that it would resign its ambassador to Cambodia and remove the ambassador. Thailand’s diplomatic ties with Cambodia also have been lowered, according to the party.
Cambodia has ordered all of Thailand’s diplomats to leave the country and ordered all of its diplomats to do so.
According to local news agency the Phnom Penh Post, the Cambodian government also downgraded diplomatic relations with Thailand to the “lowest level.”
After three soldiers were hurt while on a patrol on July 16 in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani Province and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Province, Thailand had earlier accused Cambodia of using landmines to encroach on the Thai side of the disputed border area.
