Iga Swiatek, the six-time Grand Slam champion, said she might have to miss some of her tournaments in order to keep her healthy after the China Open’s players suffered a number of injuries.
After her Colombian opponent Camila Osorio retired hurt before the second set, Swiatek won the first set 6-0 to advance to the last 16 of the Polish tennis championship in Beijing.
Lorenzo Musetti and Jakub Mensik both injured themselves on the court in the men’s tournament, making it one of five matches that were scheduled to end on Monday in China.
Top players were required to compete in each Grand Slam, 10 WTA 1, 000 events, including six 500-level tournaments starting last year, according to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Swiatek, 24, did warn that she might need to take breaks to protect herself.
The former world number one said, “It’s just impossible to squeeze it into the schedule.” Even though they are required, I might have to choose some tournaments and skip them.
We must be prudent about it; we should only consider what is best for us and not care about the regulations.
Players like Novak Djokovic have been cutting back on the number of tournaments they compete in as they approach the end of their careers, which has become a major discussion point in recent years.
Swiatek compared the requirements for top players to be “pretty crazy,” noting that “people are more worn out” during the second half of the season.
She continued, “I don’t know yet how my career will look in a few years.” The only thing I can do right away is to take good care of my body and recover from the injury I’ve already decided to play all these required tournaments.
The hardest part of Asian swinging is that you believe the season will end soon, but you must continue.
